I want to start with something that I think is really important to say clearly.
Knowing something is not the same as having worked through it.
Many of the women I work with are highly self-aware. They have read the books. They have been in therapy. They know they have patterns. They can even name their attachment style, identify the moments they self-abandon and trace their tendencies back to childhood experiences with impressive clarity.
It’s brilliant knowledge and understanding and is the foundation for growth and transformation but the patterns keep repeating. Insight is powerful, but insight alone is not integration. Knowing intellectually that you carry something from your past is a very different thing from having genuinely let it go.
Emotional baggage actually is a real, living presence in our body and in our nervous system.
Let’s look at what it actually means to work through it rather than just understand it.

When you enter a new relationship, you do not walk in alone. You bring everything with
you.
You bring all the ways you learned to protect yourself, the beliefs you formed about what love means and what you deserve, the unfinished emotional business from past relationships that stayed with you. You bring the grief that was never fully felt, the anger that was never safely expressed, the parts of yourself you shut down to avoid rejection or conflict and the expectations that formed before you were old enough to question whether they were healthy. None of this is visible to a new partner.
Often, much of it is not visible to you, but it is present. It shapes the choices you make, the things you find yourself reacting to, the moments you pull away or push too hard or stay too long in something that is not right for you.
One of the most powerful questions I have ever encountered, which comes from the work of Katherine Woodward Thomas, is this:
“What did this relationship reflect back to me about my patterns of belief and relating?”
Not “what did they do wrong?”
Not even “what did I do wrong?
But what did this relationship show me about how I am still relating from an earlier experience of love?
That question shifts everything because it moves you from being someone to whom things happen, into being someone who is actively participating in what keeps being created.
The four things I see most consistently in women who have not yet worked through their relational baggage.

The first is that they replay the same dynamic in different relationships, different names, different circumstances, same emotional experience.
The second is that they are attracted, over and over, to the familiar rather than the genuinely healthy.
The third is that they either over-accommodate, giving too much and asking for too little, or they over-protect, keeping people at a distance.
The fourth is that when someone genuinely good and stable arrives, they struggle to trust them.
These are not character flaws. They are intelligent responses to earlier emotional experiences.
These were adaptive. They helped you survive something, but they have a cost. What changes this is not more analysis. It is completion. Going back, with support and with compassion, to the things that were left unfinished, the grief that never had permission to move through, the anger that turned inward because there was nowhere safe for it to go, the fear that was never held and dispelled, the beliefs formed in childhood or in painful relationships that are still quietly governing your choices.
The work I do in my new HELD Programme addresses this at the deeper level.
It is not about repeating old stories. It is about completing them. Extracting the wisdom.
You release what no longer needs to be carried. When that work is done, even partially, even in progress, something really shifts. You stop relating automatically and begin blossoming, choosing consciously and from an evolved and mature place. The restrictive patterns begin to feel optional. The love you are available for genuinely expands.
I have created a self-reflection quiz,
Are You Carrying Old Emotional Patterns Into Love? which I will be sharing in my email Love Letters soon.
